Compaq Presario 1270

I have just recently purchased a compaq presario 1270 laptop.  I have
had little or no trouble configuring it except for these
two quirks
--the mousepad(synaptics i think) works ok under x, but every once
in a while jumps to the lower right corner of the screen
or the upper right corner.  I tried uncommenting the INITIALIZE_MOUSE define
in the pc_keyb.h file to initialize the device,
but this has no effect.  I tried different mouse drivers, to no
avail.  I even downloaded a synaptics device driver--tpconfig
which does allow me to turn off the tap mode, but doesn't have any
effect on the mouse jumping around.
--the sound configuration does not work.  I have tried the ess
solo1 driver from ALSA(www.alsa-project.org) and the
4front driver(OSS), the first does not work under linux kernel 2.2.5
or 2.2.7 and the latter works fine, but locks the system
hard when i try to turn it off.  Any ideas?
