Yes, but there's a difference here. Hardware RAID is Very expensive. If you can save yourself $1500-$3000 a box, then I'd think you'd more than make up for the loss to the CPU(s). And if you're doing something such as serving out static web pages and the like then you don't need a whole lot of processing power anyway.

Disclaimer: The preceeding statements are based in no part in actual experience as I'm a poor HS student sans sweet sweet servers or a job involving said servers, but rather based in what I've read, heard from other people, and some (il)logical conclusions I've made based on the aforementioned information.

Isn't this analogous to the whole Winmodem question? It's possible to move the processing from the controller board to the main CPU, but this is generally a bad idea because it takes up CPU time and defeats device abstraction.

Isn't there some line of Sun RAID products which uses
software RAID 5 ?  I think I remember some users complaining
about it, but I've forgotton which product it is.
It's not the A5000's, is it?
