A standard MS Proxy configuration only allows HTTP and (I believe) FTP connections. These standard connections do not use the SOCKS interface. You are only required to use SOCKS if you're going to need to access other services. Did you specify the proxy address in your web browser? BTW, bandwidth-throttling is a valid use of a proxy server, he said with a note of defensiveness. Michael W.
