[Plug] Low Memory Linux Distributions

I just got a 486 from my uncle, which is great. The bad part is that
it only has 4 meg of RAM. I've been trying to install Debian on it,
using the lowmem boot disk, but I've only gotten it to boot once.
This allowed me to create a swap space and a temporary root
partition. I have not yet been able to complete the installation.

I'm using Debian 2.0, with a 2.1 boot disk. Are there any
distributions that work better on a low memory system?

Is it worth the trouble? In a few weeks I'll be buying a P3
motherboard and 64M of ram. This means that a lot of hardware is
going to be moving down the chain.
