I think Kyle's definitions fit better.  I, like most programmers, don't
consider hackers a threat (if you use the original meaning of a hacker as
someone who works at/with computers in an above average manner).  Crackers,
OTOH, are potential problem makers rather than solvers.

I wouldn't say there's always a 'problem to be solved' maybe other than to
cure the booredom problem.  I tend to think more along the lines of:

hacking  = with curious (maybe purposful) intent

cracking = with nefarious (likely intrusive) intent
