apt-get and apt-config are good good solutions for installing over ftp. 
I prefer using dselect or dpkg -iGROEB of my mirror of the Debian Potato
Distribution for just an update.  

Concerning any Linux distribution is available on the web and ``should''
be loadable through ftp or nfs.  This is how Linux originally was spread
:-)
