Hmm. I had the same problem. I think what you may is actually very simple. Is the other machine name in /etc/hosts? otherwise try the smbclient -I or whatever the command is for IP address and it should work. If that doesn't work I don't know what's up. I just wanted to say that because the same thing happened to me - and the smb howto didn't help much.
