I would recommend you try Debian.  Most distros can be bought on a
repackaged CD from places like Cheapbytes and Linux Mall for under $5
a piece.  As for compiling your kernel, the HOWTO should be more than
sufficient.  It's just a couple make commands, copying a file,a nd
editing your lilo.conf.

Good luck with the other distros.
