Did you try remotely logging in, su-ing and then killing the original terminal session? That has gotten me out of a few jams. It's Xsreensaver or whatever the RH default is, and I use X so little I don't even know what desktop, probably the default. Isn't there some command I can give as root (from a remote session) to kind of restart the whole console interaction without restarting.
