Stupid question: Does Star Office have a database application as part of
its suite? Is is "Access" compatible?

That depends. I used Access to create some databases before I switched
to Linux. I needed access to them and THOUGHT StarOffice could access
them. Found out that I needed MS Jet Engine to even consider the idea.
