Minor point:  PPP does not imply TCP/IP.  The PPP communication protocol
supports at least TCP/IP, IPX, and NetBEUI.

Yeah, this sounds like an IBM 3270-oriented application.  There's a
communications package available for Win32 called "Rhumba".  I don't know
if there's a Linux equivalent, but it's a place to start.  I'm not sure
what communication or network protocol it uses to communicate (I never
used it at the one place I was at; I managed to avoid having to order
supplies).
