Lucky SOB. :-)

: What are some opinions on the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus family (7200 rpm, 2048k
: cache)? The drive will be ~20 gigs (maybe 27),

I've got the 20G DiamondMax.

anthrax kernel: hde: Maxtor 92048U8, ATA DISK drive

It's a really fast drive. I've got it running on an ATA66 controller
(the HPT366 that's onboard my Abit BP6). To get that supported,I had
to patch my kernel (2.2.13) using the uniform-ide patches, essentially the
2.3.x IDE subsystem back-ported to the 2.2.x series.

I'm running it as a single partition with reiserfs. Using bonnie, with a
100 MB file for testing, I get:

Sequential Output:
Per Char: 6789 K/sec
Block: 42787 K/sec
Rewrite: 10425 K/sec

Sequential Input:
Per Char: 6380 K/sec
Block: 334691 K/sec

Random Seeks/sec 26812.0

Reiserfs kicks butt.

I'd consider partitioning it, and mounting the partitions at various points
in your filesystem, like /home, /var, and so forth...
