This certainly won't help you with your specific problem, but you can eliminate the RAID controller driver issue, while also increasing modularity, by using an external SCSI-to-SCSI controller. These have SCSI channels to connect to host SCSI boards and other disk channels to connect to bunches of disks, far more than you can stick into your server box.
