I've been using it since about 3 days after it was released. My initial impression was that it seemed faster. I'm not sure how else to do describe it. Have you ever used something that just "felt good"? Like it was very, I dont know, responsive? Of course, I can't rule out the possibility of a placebo effect here. It lacks a configuration utility such as xf86config (although it's certainly in the works...it may even be available by now). However, you aren't completely stuck with writing a new XF86Config by hand from scratch. You can do a "X -configure" and it will attempt to discover some things about your hardware and write an XF86Config. The config I had generated didn't work out of the box and I had to make a couple of changes here and there (mostly with the modes) to get it to work. It's not a bad starting point though. For the most part, its been pretty stable. It has crashed about 6 or 7 times on me since I started with it. Never took the whole box down with it though. One day the machine locked up entirely while I was in X but I dont think I'm ready to blame that entirely on X. I've had it run for days on end without it crashing though. I'd say the amount of crashes I've had is acceptable for a first release of such a nasty beast. > > How's the video card support? How about the Mach 64 chipset? I can only speak for the chipset I have, the Riva128. Personally, I haven't noticed any huge improvement in what I can get out of this chipset with X, but it seems no less "supported" than it was in the previous X version. All in all, I'm happy with Xfree86 4. The major thing I want to try out soon is the multihead support. That should be pretty cool, but it remains to be seen how well it will work. Bottomline, if you've got nothing to lose give it try, but I wouldn't put it on a production box. Then again, you probably shouldn't be running any version of X on a production box :) mg ______________________________________________________________________ Philadelphia Linux Users Group - http://plug.nothinbut.net Announcements - http://lists.nothinbut.net/mail/listinfo/plug-announce General Discussion - http://lists.nothinbut.net/mail/listinfo/plug
