I just recently had this problem too.. for some reason xfstt got messed up and wouldn't load.. I just reinstalled xfstt and X worked again.. I'm assuming X was screaming because it couldn't load something that was listed in it's FontPath.. so if theres a FontPath in your XF86Config that doesn't really exist, comment it out and X should work.. --Barry On Sat, Apr 15, 2000 at 02:08:51AM -0400, Mike Cathcart wrote: > OK, so I've installed X but when I run startx I get this mess: > > System: '/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/xkbcomp -w 1 -R/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb -xkm > -m us -em1 "The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:" -emp "> " -eml > "Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server" keymap/xfree86 > compiled/xfree86.xkm' Warning: /dev/psaux unable to get status of mouse fd > (Inappropriate ioctl for device) > > Fatal server error: > could not open default font 'fixed' > > yadda yadda yadda.
