Ok, I'm not going to go into the depth that Wm. did, but just give some pointers.. Romex = Flexible plastic sheathed cable with three wires, black (Hot), White (Neutral), Bare (ground). BX = flexible coiled steel sheath with two wires, Black (Hot), and White (Neutral). Theoretically, the steel sheath on BX is used as the ground. Usu not the case unfortunately, loose screws, etc Read Wm.'s submission). Rarely, you'l stumble across BX with a thrid bare copper wire in it to be used as a ground .. YMMV. Knob and Tube = 2 wires no sheathing. Black (Hot) White (Neutral). The Black usually hits only a couple of devices (device = outlet/light/fan/switch) and can be traced to the breaker/fuse panel. THe white usually jerks all around the house with no real pattern usually.. You know what, rather than me try and explain Knob and Tube, just assume your fuxored and move on. /* Meander-Tangent-Not important I have K&T, and for my computer room, I ran an independant 12 ga. cable to the computer room, on a 20 Amp breaker. I also replaced the 60 A fuse box with a 200A breaker box..fun... no really it was..I like crouching in dark corners during the summer in a stale hot cellar in the dark working with a flashlight dealing with 220..my idea of a good time. I want to run a 220 30 Amp panel up there some time soon.. 20 A of 220 for an AC unit, and 10 A of 220 broken down into 20 A of 110 for the computers. end */ If you have K&T or BX, get an UPS with good surge supression capability. If you've got Romex, you're probably OK, but get an outlet tester to be sure. Blah, I'm heading for the City.
