There are hardware jumpers on CS, MS, SL on an IDE disk.
Before you've bought that new EIDE, you had selected CS on the old one, I
guess.
Did you select MS on the old EIDE and SL on the new EIDE
,regardless that BIOS and kernel got your configuration rigtht ?
I've seen some weird IDE disks with symptoms similar to yours.
