/etc/mail/cf is another common place for the .m4 files, depending on which
version of sendmail is on that machine. It's also "ok" to just take an
existing /etc/mail/sendmail.cf or /etc/sendmail.cf file and place it where
sendmail is looking for it....the "linux" standard version is availible
with the sendmail source tarball. This will give you an uncustomized but
working setup. (however this is not generally a "good idea" since if
someone who does it the "real" way comes along they will blow away your
changes. The real way is to use the .m4 files and generate the .cf)
As for as more detail about configuration, most of the options are listed
in the source tree
(ftp://ftp.sendmail.org/pub/sendmail/sendmail.8.11.2.tar.gz), under
sendmail-8.11.2/cf/README

The "bat book" (o'reilly sendmail) is still an excellent guide, even
though it's a bit outdated now. The backgroung and config info still
holds true.
