Yup.  I keep root logged in in a virtual terminal.. always the same one.  I
do all my root stuff from there.  Provides me better seperation.

No, that was just 1 example.  You are less likely to accidentally break
lots of things as a non-root user.  

It's just a strong recommendation.  It's your box, feel free to break it as
you see fit :)
