The version of Perl in potato is 5.00503. It sounds like you're still running 5.004. I'm not enough of a Debian guru to help with that upgrade, but I think I can at least help you get the documentation installed. Debian has Perl's documentation in a separate package from the executable. The docs for 5.004 are in perl-5.004-doc, so try running apt-get install perl-5.004-doc Walt -- Walter C.
