If it works (via "modprobe via82cxxx_audio"), try putting it in /etc/modules (at least, that's where it would be on a Debian system) or wherever modules get automatically loaded at boot on your distribution. The way I found this was perusing the menus in 'make menuconfig'; under 2.4.9, I looked at the "Sound" submenu and noticed the "VIA 82C686 Audio Codec" option. Then I looked in /lib/modules/2.4.9/kernel/drivers/sound and noticed the via82cxxx_audio.o file. I then checked under a 2.2 kernel module tree, and a file of the same name was there under the misc/ directory.
