I don't actually run ALSA, I'm using the kernel sound drivers myself...

It looks like you don't have much of the support stuff loaded.  Chris's
setup includes midi, mixer, oss emulation and maybe a couple other
things.  Depending on what you're trying to do, they may be necessary. 
It looks like you've just got the core sound module loaded.
