I've never seen that behavior, but I also always hit ^D long before I'd reach for the mouse to close a window. Thanks for the suggestions. Apparently my assessment of the problem was completely wrong. It does not have to do with the closing of the windows on the client (which actually warns you about what you are going to do), but with the timeouts of the sessions - I saw on the web that old versions of the kernel (pre 2.4) have this kind of 'signal 15' errors when running sshd. The solution was 'upgrade to 2.4.x...', which right now is not an option.
