Here is my scenario: I have an exchange server. It is hosting 'abc.com'. The Exchange server is able to communicate with every other domain on the internet except for domains on this particular sendmail server. We will use the example 'xyz.com' as the domain hosted on the sendmail server in this example. When anyone on the 'abc.com' network attempts to communicate with 'xyz.com' it is unable to do so. Upon these attempts, the log file below appears in the sendmail logs and an error stating 'unable to deliver to remote server' appears in the Exchange logs. Now, here is the twist in the scenario: The company which owns the sendmail server is a hosting service. They had expected to get the hosting account for 'abc.com' and had prematurely setup a zone file in their DNS servers for 'abc.com'. My guess is that this premature zone file in their LOCAL DNS servers is what is causing the problem. When sendmail recieves the smtp request, I assume that sendmail then attempts a DNS lookup. because it has a zone file (though it shouldnt be there) in thier LOCAL DNS server for 'abc.com', it is resolving the domain to bogus IP information (whatever is entered in the premature zone file) and therefor the 'abc.com' exchange server is timing out and disconnecting. Let me know what you think.
