From what I read from your request is that the professor is looking for
some very basic beginner programming.

Here's my list:

Linux Unleashed Husain, Parker, et al Sams


These are very basic books that cover everything from C to the various interperted languages


In my bioinformatics class, the 'programming' seemed to involve invoking programs [BLAST] and processing their output. Our programs usually involved mainly text processing - which is why I suggested Perl rather than C.

BTW Linux Unleashed is a horrid book.
