        Yes they are - though I've never used them with emacs!  I use a 
bunch of tools for those "obscure proprietary operating systems" (eg. Mac 
OS and Windows) that use ctags (or the equivalent) and they make 
development SO MUCH EASIER!   Always makes me wonder why people continue to 
use stone knives...
