And, rereading it myself, I'm reminded of a question I should have
asked:

What do YOU think of as "copying and pasting" under X?

The middle mouse button or actually using a menu (or keyboard
shortcut) function?

Does the latter work the way you expect under KDE and the former
not?

(If so, then your old Gnome did an evil, incompatible thing when
copying between two instances of its terminal program to move the
primary buffer into the clipboard buffer and paste that way when you
clicked the middle buttong rather than do it the "right" way and
just transfer the data directly. Hopefully, it was sane enough to
only do this with other Gnome apps that new this bamboozling was in
the works.)

Unrelatedly, I'm sure Ian could speak to any of your user interface
pickiness about KDE. :^>
