As someone else pointed out, it started life based on Red Hat, but it's not anymore. Which brings me to a little-known fact: SuSE started out in basically the same way with regard to Slackware. (I noticed a similarity in directory structure between the two and commented on it to somebody. They said that Pat Volkerding helped them get started.)
