Next time you have occasion to change cables & boot using 
the onboard ide controller I would suggest putting something
on the promise controller if you haven't tried that configuration 
yet (for example, an IDE cdrom); if it reads the device correctly then 
you'd know that the necessary kernel module / drivers are 
properly installed..this will help narrow down the problem.
