Fwiw, NetBSD pkgsrc has had this (that is, a regexp structure to
match and correctly compare version numbers in whatever silly format
the vendor provides them) solved since the 1.3 days (NetBSD 1.6
should ship this summer) and, by all reports, Debian doesn't run
into this kind of trouble (don't have a Debian box to try on), so if
RPM really can't deal then it's demonstrably inferior and should
either be fixed or kicked permanently to the curb.

This can't be a hard thing to fix, if it's even still broken and
especially considering the prior art available here. Not that that's
work I'm the least bit interested in doing. Last I checked RedHat
employed quite a few people to take care of precisely crap like
this.
