And from your local view, or just from the server? Netscape mail (sorry...) will do this. Same setting as someone else mentioned, 'leave messages on server' for pop3. It'll still download a copy to you locally when you check mail, but they also stay on the server until you delete them from the Inbox. How close is this to what you want?

I try to approximate IMAP functionality. Works well with both Eudora and Pegasus. They each do it a little differently. Perhaps, by describing what they do, I can better explain what I am looking for.

With Eudora, I "leave mail on server". Then from the inbox headers, I can mark selected headers to delete from the server next time I connect. The local copy is not deleted; just the server copy. This system works well. It has one flaw in that mail deleted from the local inbox only can no longer be managed on the server.

With Pegasus, I can download headers only. Then, after reading the headers I can mark them to 1) retrieve a copy, 2) retrieve a copy and delete from server, 3) delete from server w/o retrieving, or 4) do nothing (do not retrieve, but leave on the server). This is the best implementation. Star Office can be configured to work the same way, but this feature just doesn't work on my copy of the program.

Using either of these programs, can manage my mail on the server in a way that approximates IMAP (pseudo-IMAP?). I hope that these descriptions clarify my needs. Any Linux programs with this functionality?

BTW, Pegasus is a great freeware program. I wish David Harris would write a Linux port. (Technically, its "manualware". The software is free. You can support its development by buying the printed manual. The software is easy enough to use without the manual.)
