Are you referring to the 'noathlon' kernel command-line parameter?

FWIW, I've been running a 1.2GHz Thunderbird for over a year now with no
problems.  Just don't enable APIC support when you build your kernel and
you should be fine.  (Or enable it, and use 'noathlon' (I think).)
