what kind of processor/motherboard chipset is it?  if i recall
correctly, for instance, most socket 7 motherboards (k6/pentium - intel
tx and vx chipsets) would not cache anything over 64MB, which meant any
amount over that wasn't going to help and would actually make things
seem slower.
