There are two different aic7xxx modules available in the kernel. One is the original dating back to the 2.0 series kernel and the second is a vendor supported module. I think the current default is the newer module. You may need to switch to the older one. I ran into an issue with SMP support, the pre-emptable kernel patch and both aic7xxx drivers. I eventaully had to disable SMP support to get it working correctly. I seem to remember reading a series of complaints about certain aic7xxx cards not being true aic7xxx cards. The only solution offered was to try one of the other aic modules.
