Have you got pax using rmt(8) with any success? As near as I can
tell from its man page, it simply doesn't know about networked
backup devices...

I've had worlds of trouble making GNU tar write, via rmt(8), to
Solaris hosts (coming from any OS; it's GNU tar's issuance of
commands to rmt's stdin that matters), and I know and love pax and
wish it could do this, but I don't think it can.
