I have an acer. I got a few coasters, but I think that was due to the cds. W/ this new pack of cds, burning has been flawless. I only burn at 4x, though as I have a slow, but highly loaded system, and I, too prefer to burn a cd right, once, rather than to burn it fast and make coasters. I don't really know if faster burning gives coasters, though. If you have a bit more money, think of getting a dvd rw+ burner, as it burns cds as well as dvds (which imho are not worth the money right now), and also plays dvds.
