from which browser?  I just noticed that this does work for me
from konqueror but not mozilla on an older SuSE (7.3) distro.
For me, mozilla says "smb is not a registered protocol" which
means, I guess, that one could register it somehow.  Is that what
redhat 7.3 did?

Do you mean "smbclient //machine/share"?  Is there a shell that
redhat uses that understands URLs like that?  bash does not as
far as I can tell.
