[PLUG] debian dist-upgrade from woody (stable) to sarge (testing) report

Mostly irc logs with timestamps:

apt-get update;apt-get -du dist-upgrade

01:04<Darxus> 364 packages upgraded, 15 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
01:04<Darxus> Need to get 184MB of archives. After unpacking 28.9MB will be used.
01:54<Darxus> Fetched 184MB in 49m8s (62.4kB/s)
01:54<Darxus> Download complete and in download only mode

apt-get -u dist-upgrade

02:02<Darxus> Errors were encountered while processing:
02:02<Darxus> /var/cache/apt/archives/xfree86-common_4.1.0-17_all.deb
02:02<Darxus> E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
02:02<Darxus> dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/xfree86-common_4.1.0-17_all.deb (--unpack):
02:02<Darxus> trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/X11', which is also in package realplayer

ran "dpkg -r realplayer" and reran apt-get dist-upgrade (this realplayer
package was aliened from an rpm downloaded from the realplayer site, and
not an official debian package)

02:09<Darxus> /var/cache/apt/archives/python-dns_2.3.0-1_all.deb
02:09<Darxus> E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
02:09<Darxus> dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/python-dns_2.3.0-1_all.deb (--unpack):
02:09<Darxus> trying to overwrite `/usr/lib/python2.1/site-packages/DNS/Base.py', which is also in package linkchecker

ran "dpkg -r linkchecker" and reran apt-get dist-upgrade (I believe this
was an official debian package)

02:13<Darxus> Setting up lilo (22.3.3-2) ...
02:13<Darxus> Old /boot/boot.b symlink discovered, put the line "install=menu" in
02:14<Darxus> /etc/lilo.conf instead.
02:14<Darxus> Removing sym link

haven't done anything about this, haven't noticed problems (rebooted
afterward)

02:18<Darxus> # apt-get -u dist-upgrade
02:18<Darxus> 0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
02:18<Darxus> ..done
02:18<Darxus> (nut is on hold)
02:18<Darxus> rebooting
02:19<Darxus> back up
02:20<Darxus> reinstalled linkchecker

So I upgraded from one major Debian release to another, 364 packages, in
1.27 hours (14.3 seconds per package), including 49 minutes of download
time over relatively slow DSL (608kbits), with only one real hiccup
that was the result of an official Debian package (linkchecker), and
one that was a result of me playing with alien. Both problems were easily
solved by uninstalling the offending package, which was clearly indicated
by useful error messages, and in the case of linkchecker, I just
reinstalled it after the rest of the upgrade was complete.

I love Debian.
