I've been using squirrelmail (http://squirrelmail.org) and have been very
happy with it.  You need an IMAP server, check their site for what is
compatible.  I set up Cyrus which was a little bit of a pain, but not too
bad.  I've put up some notes on the subject at http://linuxnotes.net.  If
you need any help let me know.
