I've been using squirrelmail (http://squirrelmail.org) and have been very happy with it. You need an IMAP server, check their site for what is compatible. I set up Cyrus which was a little bit of a pain, but not too bad. I've put up some notes on the subject at http://linuxnotes.net. If you need any help let me know.
