If the protocol stream CR/LF's a lot that's indication that is the incorrect dev and/or protocol. Sun Type5's use the PS/2 protocol. Also, have you setup gpm yet? Are you able to get the gpm to repeat the protocol correctly when switching back and fourth from X to VT?
