[PLUG] Weird APT error message

So what do we make of this:

0 packages upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 139 not
upgraded.

E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg exited unexpectedly
root@minas-aran:/home/turgon#

Additionally, "apt-get upgrade" segfaults.

Have I been hacked or something? What's with this "adam" stuff? Or am I
just fscked up, somehow?

Note that it doesn't always happen:
