Re: [PLUG] Verizon DSL modem/bridge
|
I'm connected right now, but the response is not steady or fast. The
wireless link is good, but the Internet connection is losing packets.
Internet:
100 packets transmitted, 69 received, 31% loss, time 99143ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 75.164/111.823/411.404/44.874 ms
Wireless link:
20 packets transmitted, 20 received, 0% loss, time 19044ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 3.470/3.737/4.021/0.188 ms
I wonder if "WebShare" can do a soft reset and if that will be as
effective as a hard reset.
I guess I can try a static route again to get to the DSL "device". I
have a PC at 192.168.0.1 on my end. So, I need to force a connection
through 192.168.32.2 to 192.168.32.1 and on to the DSL device at
192.168.0.1.

Are you saying that the polarity of the line could be the problem?
Don't know the answer to that one...
I have an original (grey) Westel modem (Model A90-36R-515). (It really
is a dumb modem.) And I have never had to power cycle the local box.
However, I have had to have DCA/Verizon get the DSLAM reset on several
occasions. [Reset = Verizon didn't find anything wrong, but it now works.]
For what it's worth, my version has no monitor interface of any kind
-- at least not that anyone admits to, or that I have been able to
discover.
Is your Ready light on steady or blinking? Blinking means no-sync with
the DSLAM.
This means that the modem is not talking to the DSLAM, no carrier
signal -- no "software" operation is taking place at this stage...
haven't gotten that far yet. Sometimes power-cycling locally will
reestablish sync, but usually it is the DSLAM.
One easy way to see if you are getting any carrier at all from the
DSLAM... pickup the phone and unplug the splitter, turn off (or
disconnect from the phone line) your local modem. If you have a DSLAM
on the other end that is talking to you, you will hear standard modem
hash. But even if you do have carrier, it could still be "wedged."
If this box talks "WebShare" -- try:
http://192.168.0.1
That is the default web interface, apparently on the entire 21000
series - which appear to all be "smart" boxes - but definitely on the
21010 series... Westel's website doesn't have a lot of info under
support. (www.westel.com) However, interestingly, all of the ones
described support Mac OS X and amazingly have instructions for it in
the FAQ.
Don't forget -- if you go after the 192.168.0.1 address, you will need
to change your own subnet mask and gateway manually to get to it if
you have a real one active, or have nothing configured.
Webshare may or may not be installed on your model by default, can't
tell. Couple of Webshare FAQ answers:
"WebShare needs to be installed with a Windows 95, 98, NT or 2000
machine. However, once the WebShare software upgrade has been
completed, you can use the upgraded modem on any operating system with
an internet browser, including Linux and MacIntosh."
"No. Once the password has been entered into the login screen of the
WebShare software, you just need to open your browser. However, you
can install the software onto the computer and it will install the
WebShare icon onto your desktop of your computer to allow you to
automatically connect to the WebShare software. If you do not install
this software, you can manually go to the login screen by typing
http://192.168.0.1 in the URL:// bar of the browser."
