Also look at "autofs".

I wonder if there is an option to have smbmount time out.  Maybe it 
takes the M$ approach and leaves the share mounted until the user shuts 
down the PC.  In any case, the automounter should take care of it.

Last month Linux Journal had an article on replacing an Exchange server, 
but it required Outlook clients.
