My D-Link router was defaulted to channel 6.  I changed to channel 11 
for two reasons.  One, as you mentioned, the default channel is the most 
commonly used.  The more important reason is that my cantenna favors the 
frequency used by channel 11.  There is a noticable change in signal 
quality as I move back from channel 11 to channel 1.
