named.conf on the master and the two slaves has no settings, should they?

In all my zone files I have:

                        28800 ; refresh
                        7200 ; retry
                        604800 ; expire
                        86400 ; ttl

--> Did you throw in an "allow-transfer" statement?

No. IIRC from my limited reading the default is yes, but now I will re-check
that.

--> I don't know how this works, but according to your reference, if the

--> then the "slave" will no longer try to pull the update from that
--> "master" server. Could that have happened?

Very possible, the master is a guest in VMWare which could have been
(virtually) powered off - but I don't think it was. Also I moved the three
machines from LAN to DMZ and in that process they may have lost
communication. This is actually why I asked
--> Is there a detailed with examples howto out there for this stuff?:
-->                         28800 ; refresh
-->                         7200 ; retry
-->                         604800 ; expire
-->                         86400 ; ttl
as I want updates to propagate reasonably, but also want the slaves to carry
on happily without the master around.

Talked to my neighbor a bit ago and he suggested I hang out at the book
store with the O'Reily's BIND book (PLUG pop quiz: What animal is on the
cover?) for 90 minuets and read and take notes...
