[PLUG] Book review: Complete Wireless Home Networking (XP ed)

Hi Again:

I grabbed two of the books at the last PLUG meeting and here is the first review.

Title: Complete Wireless Home Networking (Windows XP Edition)

This book does not live up to its billing. It does cover the terms, basic setup in the valid Windows invironments, WEP security and some oh so basic trouble shooting. Where it is lacking is in its troubleshooting section and in its more advanced security. Things not covered are removing SSID broadcast, limiting access to specifc MAC addresses and taking advantage of some of the advanced router features. Now router features are not specifi to the wireless world, but it is important to have setup information at least in a basic sense so people could access there computer remotely if they choose to.

What I liked about the book was that it explained things in simiple terms, even clearing up a misconception I had had. The step by step instructions are good. It gives the reader information about how to shop for a good card. Lastly, it covers some tools out there that are real world like email and IM.
