thanks for the help, but i don't think this is really related to the
problem i'm having.  

the system can allocate ptys just fine outside of the chroot--it's where
i did all my testing for the script that i'm trying to run inside of
the chroot.  though now that we've brought up the subject of
kernel-recompiling... this is something devfs could fix, right?
