I noticed that the help on the kernel compile for /dev/pty pointed to devfs as a more generic solution. If you use devfs then you need to change a lot of items in your system to make it work again. Like /etc/fstab /etc/lilo.conf and others that I have not thought about.

the system can allocate ptys just fine outside of the chroot--it's where
i did all my testing for the script that i'm trying to run inside of
the chroot.  though now that we've brought up the subject of
kernel-recompiling... this is something devfs could fix, right?
