If you don't get my point, I am just curious if there would be any chance someone could see the check and not the letter. Seems a bit unusual. Maybe you should check with someone who might be able to give you better advice, heck, even the ask-the-lawyer column in the newspaper might be better advice. Also, look over labor law.
