Re: [PLUG] Ports needed to use Samba or MS networking functions

Thanks,

They are all WinXP workstations. What was very cool was, when I typed in the IP address when adding a printer on the remote system, the printers share name popped up. So there is information exchange. I think what is happening is, that since the computers are on a different subnet, browser elections are not held amoung including the one remote computer and, the computer registration is not propigated with the information to browse.

What ever works. But, I disagree with the above statement. The function of WINS is to NetBIOS as DNS is to the Internet. As longs as all computers are registering with a single WINS server, any computer can resolve names using that WINS server.

NetBIOS doesn't work across subnets because routers by default do not forward broadcasts.

WINS is moot if you're working with a Windows 2000 domain; WINS has been deprecated in the Windows world in favor of DNS.
